Falling and Laughing

24 Sep

I’ve just finished reading “Falling and Laughing” by Grace Maxwell, a book about the rehabilitation of Edwyn Collins (of Orange Juice) after two brain haemorrages.  It really is a remarkable tale of resiliance, and tenacity.  No matter how desperate things were Grace was unwilling to give up hope and kept fighting for the best for Edwyn.  The result is that he is now performing again.

It is also an incredible story of the workings of the brain.  Edwyn suffers from aphasia which means it is incredibly difficult for him to find words.  He also lost his ability to read and write.  Somehow though his brain triumphed and he could still find a way to communicate and finally find a way to rebuild his abilities (perhaps using different bits of his brain).

I find books like this really inspirational.  This isn’t kid on adversity, this is the real deal that people find the strength to triumph over.  The effort Edwyn has to put into every word, and the effort he is prepared to put into every word is chastening indeed.
