Decision Days

30 Sep

It seems to be part of the writer’s lot to always have one eye on the calendar for decision days – usually the last day of the month, when you are told a competition will announce its results.  Waiting for results is a strange business because no matter how much you’ve convinced yourself you probably won’t win, there is always a little bit of you expecting good news.  The results for the Eileen Gilmour Award are meant to have been posted by today, and since the mail brought nothing of any interest I can assume I haven’t won.  But then, hope won’t so easily be quashed.  Last year – when I did win it was the middle of November before I got my letter.  I’ll never forget the day.  It was a horrendous day weatherwise with a gale and horizontal rain, and I was getting new windows fitted.  While the brave souls carried on freezing to death outside the house, I jumped about the hall waving my letter in the air.

This year though I’m not confident of winning, in fact I’m sure there is another writer today doing a similar dance somewhere.  The theme of Routes to Roots (particularly after last year’s theme of Homecoming) didn’t grab me much, although I think I still managed a reasonable tale, time will tell.  Hope won’t die until I see an actual list of this year’s winners, when I will print out another copy, and send it off to some other unsuspecting soul.

I make nice frocks and write average poetry. And there's a bit of embroidery and the occasional rant.
