I had an interview yesterday (result pending) so was couldn’t really think clearly enough to write so I spent the day catching up with reading writers’ magazines.  This has resulted in me looking at competitions again, something I haven’t done for a few months.

For the past couple of years I’ve been religiously trawling through Mslexia and The Writing Magazine for every short story competition going, logging them on my nicely colour-coded Excel worksheet and even entering some of them.  (You can see the results of some of them on my menu bar).  However since I got accepted onto the Faber course my short story writing has amount to zero, as I have been spending all my time and brain power on my novel.

I’m still not sure what the best tactic is – do I concentrate on the novel or try to build up a portfolio to impress the publishers?  I think I’ve probably got enough publications of short stories to show some promise, so in the meantime it’s the novel.  There are some rather attractive comps coming up nearer the end of the year and into Jan, so I’ll just have to get this first draft finished and I can use the marinating time to write something else.
