Fear of Failure/Fear of Success

25 Nov

I’ve had some really positive feedback from people who have read my story in The Second Tide and from the Faber Academy group, but I still find it difficult sometimes to harness those feelings and turn them into action.

As my novel gets longer it is getting harder to move quickly to the bit I want to work on and I find myself going over and over the early pages before scrolling down to get to the bit I’m meant to be woconcentrating on.  I’ve got as many pages of notes as I have of novel, and it seems to take so long to consider just one point that I feel as though I’m not really moving anywhere fast.

I’ve been advised to eat my elephant one chunk at a time but feel as though I’m currently inside the elephant and trying to find the best way out.  I’m also possibly constructing lovely menus for elephant meat, rather than just chewing on the damn thing.  I’ve now got so many markers and To Do lists within my folder that I’m struggling a bit.  Maybe that is why writers work from start to finish rather than jump about the way I’m doing.  Then again, I don’t think any method is foolproof and it is the way of the artist to struggle.

I make nice frocks and write average poetry. And there's a bit of embroidery and the occasional rant.
