Counting Words

24 Jan

I was just skimming through old posts and I see that from the 21st of Dec to 21st of Jan I managed a grand total of 5000 words.  Some way short of the famed 1000 words a day target.  In my defence, the daily word count is less relevant at this stage as I am constantly going backwards and forwards through the first section of the book, making amendments which quite often reduce the word count but hopefully improve the book.  I’m also taking out my ‘To Do’ notes as I go, which probably account for thousands of words dotted throughout the novel.

At the start of the writing process I took the absolute minimum length for a book of 60000 words as my target.  I’m nearly at that now, and nowhere near the end of my book, but it had been a useful number to keep my eye on as any novel length is scary for a girl who is more used to putting everything into 2000 words, or even 150 for my flash.  What the word count at the end of the process will be is anyone’s guess.  Many of my Faber buddies talk about only using 10%, but then they tend to write expansively and cut down where as I tend to writie minimally and then fan out (NB. Not pad out, but fan out into other little interesting pathways, or just to give more life to the piece).

I make nice frocks and write average poetry. And there's a bit of embroidery and the occasional rant.
