Don Paterson & Ruth Thomas

1 Feb

Faber Academy last week was up to its usual very high standard with two great guests – Don Paterson and Ruth Thomas.

We were treated to a poetry masterclass by Don – how to make sound scapes and evoke mood through metre, rhythm and rhyme.  Wonderful – although I’ll need to go through my notes again to understand it all, as we were all a bit distracted by the Celtic Connections musicians who had taken over much of the Art Club that night and were geein it laldy.

Ruth Thomas on Saturday was great as well, but in a different way.  Ruth shared with us her experience of starting out in writing – first as a short story writer, now as a novelist as well – she even gave us a sneak preview of her latest novel (which she had only finished a couple of days before).  Really interesting to hear how she wove her way through the publishing world.
