Advice for Writers

1 Mar

Just about to go and meet a friend of a friend who is keen to take her writing from an occasional scribble to something with a bit more purpose and she’s looking to me for advice! So I’ve been thinking about what to say. My immediate instinct (ex-librarian that I am) is to put together a list of websites (many from my Blogs I Follow) and books – You’ve got to read Stephen King’s On Writing, but I think the most valuable advice I can give anyone is if you want to do it, JUST DO IT, and then don’t stop.
I’ve been thinking about a few things in life that aren’t quite hitting the mark at the moment, my attempts to get an agent being one of them. Sometimes I think, am I just wasting my time, but then I think about the alternative, and that’s giving up. What would my life be like if I just stopped writing? Some days I’m torturing myself to get the words down, so why not just stop? And when I put it like that, really harshly, I know that writing for me is like breathing – if I stop doing it, I stop living. So no more angst, no more, ‘is it worth carrying on?’ because the alternative is unbearable. So to all the writers out there, if you can can’t live without writing, then don’t. Write, Breath, Enjoy – it is meant to be fun after all.

I make nice frocks and write average poetry. And there's a bit of embroidery and the occasional rant.
