Being in it to win it

8 Mar

I’m delighted to tell you that I’ve just won a Mslexia competition. Now before you all get too impressed and feel the need to bow down at my feet, I have to confess that it wasn’t anything to do with my writing. I had simply entered the monthly competition they have on their website, which requires you only to answer a multiple choice question. But don’t knock it. I’ve now got a beautiful collection of maps from http://www.writingmaps.com to help inspire my writing. Each map folds out and gives you ideas on character, place etc. Valuable tools indeed. I once one an overnight in a spa for two people just by filling out a form in a magazine, not to mention the hamper and Dyson I won at Christmas in raffles (which is a bit different).

It also illustrates the point that if you don’t enter competitions, or submit your stories/poems/novels then you have absolutely no chance of winning. So be brave, send things off, try your hand. Even if the comp isn’t for writing, you might get a nice little prize to brighten your day, and reward you for all the unpaid hours of work you put in.

Some competitions to try (as ever please check T&Cs and closing dates):

Mslexia short story competition – closing 18th of March (On Internation Women’s Day I’m not going to apologies for the fact that it’s women only) http://www.mslexia.co.uk

Bath short story comp – closing 30th of March    http://bathshortstoryaward.co.uk/

Or treat yourself to some writing maps at http://www.writingmaps.com

I make nice frocks and write average poetry. And there's a bit of embroidery and the occasional rant.
