The Mocking Sunset

The beauty of the sunset mocked her as Megan sat on the bench. They had first kissed under the tree sheltering from the winter rains. In spring time, as the buds began to form and the bluebells burst around them, he told her he loved her, that he would always be true. In summer they lazed, their arms and legs melded together so that Megan could not tell what flesh was hers, what his. He was quiet in the autumn, deep in thought, and when the snows came he asked her the question.

It had been a perfect day for a wedding, pale pink cherry blossom, bright yellow gorse. The guests mingled in the sunshine, admired the scenery, posed for photo after photo. It was a full hour before they first started to drift away, an hour more before only Megan remained. But she would sit here, watching the beauty of the sunset mock her, waiting for him to come.
