The State of Liberty

The State of Liberty

We toast the black and white Manhattan, sip champagne and seal our union with a kiss.

We didn’t know how free we were when you promised me the World, and I believed it was so easily gifted.

We said, ‘in sickness and in health,’ but never counted on so many hospitals, so many patients.

We said, ‘for richer or poorer,’ and foolishly thought that meant money.

But we promised, ‘from this day forward,’ and we’ve managed that, forward together, not sailing around the Statue of Liberty or taking in a game at Madison Square, but traveling through our cares and worries for twenty years together.

To Have and To Hold – not free, but not prisoners either.

This post was inspired the photo of the Statue of Liberty at Creative Writing Ink
