Barefaced Lies and boogie-woogie boasts by Jools Holland

What a great book – you feel like Jools is reading it to you.  Very interesting and honest account of the effect of music and stardom.  He’s had a very varied life of music and presenting with lots of bands both before and after Squeeze.  Just when he decided to forget about making money  and just do what made him happy, he found big success with his Big Band.  Going to see him tomorrow night, and will appreciate it all the more after this read.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Really enjoyed reading this book about three women living in Jackson, Miss. in the 1960s.  Two of the women are black maids, the other a white mistress.  Miss Skeeter (the white woman) decides to write a book about what it is like to be a maid and gathers people around her to help.  The undertaking is very dangerous at a time of riots and assassinations for all of the women and a feeling of threat runs through the book.

The other theme of the book is friendship, and how much we put up with from those we like to think of as friends.  Can they survive in the face of racism and downright cruelty?

Might be interesting to read also for those working on different voices in narrative as the three women are all distinctively portrayed.
